and a mandate to make the city the safest place
for the newborns*
*One out of 22 infants in India does not live to

Hyderabad,August'2008:The
country's first Neonatal Intensive Care and
Emergencies (NICE) : Institute for the Newborn,
was inaugurated recently by Dr Y S Rajasekhara
Reddy, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in the
presence of Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy
Chairman, Planning Commission, G M Rao, Chairman,
GMR Group, Dr Isher Judge Ahluwalia and Dr K Anji
Reddy, Chairman, Dr Reddy's Laboratories.
In Hyderabad, 2 newborns die every hour for the
lack of adequate neonatal care, and many more live
with permanent handicaps because the right care
didn’t reach them at the right time. The lack of
adequate neonatal care has been one of the major
factors contributing to alarming infant mortality
rates in the country. "We are losing 50 per cent of the
infants to infections. In the battle between
infection and the baby, baby is the loser. We are
trying to address this space, " said Dr Padmanabh
Reddy, CEO, NICE Foundation.
NICE
(Neonatal Intensive Care &
Emergencies) Foundation is an autonomous
charitable trust that aspires to end decades of
neglect of maternal and neonatal health and combat
maternal and child
mortality.
NICE
Institute for the Newborn, a 120 bed facility, is
exclusively dedicated for neonatal care, education
and research in Hyderabad with a commitment to
make the city the safest place for newborns. The
Institute is established under the aegis of NICE
Foundation, for high-end medical intensive care at
affordable and subsidized costs to benefit the
poorest of the poor.
Set up as a
Public-Private partnership between NICE
Foundation, Naandi Foundation and the State
Government of Andhra Pradesh, and several
philanthropists
NICE Institute is
the first-of-its-kind in India. It has been set up
to provide global quality medical care to newborns
from all sections of society with fifty percent of
the beds in the Institute being reserved for the
under-privileged. The Institute is networked with
all maternity hospitals within a radius of around
9 km from Masab tank. It caters to a wide range of
communities and income groups, for the delivery of
appropriate level of neonatal care, including
emergency transportation to our facility from
other hospitals. This is going to be done through
our mobile intensive care units that have Newborn
Transport Teams who are on call 24/7. Along with
providing critical medial care and support to the
newborns the Institute will also be a dynamic
centre of education and research in the area of
Perinatal-Neonatal Healthcare drawing from the
experience from renowned national and
international and doctors and scientists.
Besides addressing
the public health needs of the Newborn in this
state, NICE Institute hopes to serve as a model
for other states and developing countries in
reducing regional neonatal mortality rates.
Under the guidance
of Chairman, Dr. K. Anji Reddy and the leadership
of CEO, Dr. M. Padmanabh Reddy, NICE is committed
to provide high quality affordable healthcare
especially for the poorer sections of the society.
