Young and aspiring Politicians can now polish their oratory skills

Workshop on Public Speaking for Politicians announced

Hyderabad,July'08 :  One thing that politicians love the most is the "Mike". With the elections around the corner this time, they like it even more. The result marathon speeches. Mostly repetitive, dull and boring. Each political party and contesting candidate worth their salt try their best to attract the electorate, attempting for maximum influence in the shortest possible time to win friends and get votes with their oratory skills. The more the speeches, the clumsier they become. Regardless of how good or bad the speeches, the poor voters become mute victims.

Boring they might be, but speeches are necessary during this season. Hence there is a demand for prolific orators. Helping to creating more orators is Hyderabad based Media Junction. A centre dedicated exclusively for the cause of Public Speaking has been making fast strides in this area of specialisation. It has even set up its own place known as speech lab in Musheerabad in city. It has just announced a four-day Workshop on Effective Public Speaking exclusively for Politicians. Probably for the first time in India catering exclusively to politicians, the new batch is scheduled to be held from July 31 to 3rd August in city at Media Junction premises in Musheerabad. The classes will be held in the evening from 6 to 9:30 PM. Subject enthusiast, Media and Public Relations Consultant D. Ramchandram of Solus Media will conduct the classes.

Though the training programmes are being conducted for the past four years, only in the recent past, it has been attracting a good number of politicians, especially young and upcoming politicians with few years of experience, who want to make their mark. Their intentions are very clear. The young aspiring politicians unlike others want to learn oratory skills systematically.

Over several hundred adults whom the training program attracted, about 70 are established politicians and aspiring politicians. The number is gradually increasing. Enquiries from this tribe is gradually increasing off late informed Kalpana, Director of Media Junction. If this seventy number is any indication, more are going to opt the program especially keeping in view of the impending general elections, launch of new parties, dynamic political scenario in the state unlike never before, informed D. Ramchandram, the subject enthusiast and trainer of the Effective Public Speaking program.

Given the challenges of campaigning, such as time constraints and quite a good number of people to be reached and more areas to be covered, many political parties, contesting candidates obviously look for powerful speakers who can mesmerise voters. Effective Public Speaking is one of the available tools to reach more potential voters. An effective speech will be a sure mantra for success besides lot of money required to win. All politicians know about it. Hence, there is a huge opportunity for effective public speaking training, felt D. Ramchandram, who has over thirty Public Speaking training programmes and several other programs to his credit.

Though the awareness is not still satisfactory for this kind of training program, things are changing. More young and educated youth are taking plunge into politics. See for instance Sudhir Reddy (name changed on request), in early thirties, a Software Engineer in USA returned to city and aspires to contest as MLC. When the thought came to his mind, he looked for a course that teaches oratory skills and joined in a four day workshop conducted by Media Junction. Sudhir is very clear that he needs to be very good at Oratory Skills before he gets into politics which according to him might happen in near future.

Even those established politicians like Sarpanches, Corporators, ZPTC, MPTC members who are already in politics for sometime have also realised that there is only one way to be a successful political leader is to make sense every time they get up to speak. Most of the politicians when they speak they make lot of ‘noise’ and only some seasoned, experienced and trained speakers make ‘sense’. Janta will only prefer to listen to the best orators. With the more political parties, more candidates, politicians need to distinguish themselves from others. They realise that only best orators fair well among the current crop of candidates.

Public Speaking as a must to be acquired skill by politicians is never in focus like it is now. echarcha.com - a website went a step further in organising charcha (discussion) "Should politicians take public speaking courses?" on its site www.echarcha.com. One participant in the debate observed that "I was at a meeting the other day and I was amazed by the speech given by 'mantri mahoday. The speech showed total disrespect for the audience as it showed a complete lack of preparedness".

Another participant said "the subject kept meandering and frankly the 'gora's' were bewildered by this person who is representing our country!! And to make matters worse, he was trying to sell India but kept repeating apologetically 'yes, we have a lot of problems'. I think they should attend not only public speaking classes, but all some classes on people skills and business etiquette".

Not sparing even good orators like Vajpayee another participant posted his views on the site that politicians should undergo COMPULSORY public speaking courses. Probably he was referring to other netas.

"They definitely need some training in public speaking. Aren’t there more educated leaders in India? I remember a speech by Rajeev Gandhi on TV when I was a kid. He was speaking at some international meeting or something and I remember thinking, this guy is very charismatic. His body language, manner of speaking, diction, everything was holding the attention. I don't think the current leaders care about their public images. They don't dress well. I mean wear the khadis if you want to but in better styles. And have you noticed how almost all politicians have these huge round bellies!" is how another reacted to the charcha.

There is a different side to this argument as well. It is fine to expect leaders to be very good orators but they fight so badly with their verbal dual in the assembly, they must better learn to ‘shut up’ as well. To strengthen this argument, "I am the ‘Speaker’ in the Assembly. But, there are many ‘loud speakers’ said Mr. K.R. Suresh Reddy, Speaker of A.P Legislative Assembly speaking at a public function in citt sometime back. Obviously indicating that our MLAs must be taught not only to speak well, but, also when to shut up.

There is lot of truth in this argument. Good speakers not only know how to speak well but also when to shut up. We not only teach our participants to ‘Stand Up and Speak Up’, we also teach them to ‘Shut Up’ as well added D. Ramchandram.

There are three things to aim at in public speaking: first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself, and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience". Organised public speaking comes with little bit of training, preparation and practice. If you have to be a good speaker, you must make sure you have finished speaking before your audience has finished listening you. If your audience finish listening, you will be a bore public speaker we tell our participants of the pubic speaking program, informed D. Ramchandram.

Another argument is that people don’t trust politicians. They hardly believe in political speeches. They don’t work. Biggest challenge of any political speech is to win the trust of the audience. Speeches loose credibility when the speakers don’t fulfill their promises. The audience might clap during a speech, but that does not necessarily mean that they are going to vote in his favour or his party’s candidate. No committed person will ever change his/her opinion after listening to a speech. But good case presented can influence the neutral masses, observed D. Ramchandram

Even if speeches may not inspire the general public, D. Ramchandram said, they are necessary to motivate, party workers, cadres to put in good efforts and publicize the party’s agenda. "They work harder when they are inspired. That helps to increase the number of votes for the party. Party supporters will be excited if the party’s agenda is effective. Today politicians must focus more on sharing information and knowledge to the ill informed workers and voters. That knowledge, also includes arguments that the XYZ Party or ABCD candidate is the better choice in the elections.

We may find strange here subjecting politicians to the rigmarole of Public Speaking training, but, Politicians in the west always went through this kind of programs either at Dale Carnegie Institute or Toastmasters Club or other training centres. Many world renowned politicians, corporate executives, leaders were trained in Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie as early as first quarter of nineteenth century.

Even the current race for the White House in USA is believed to be decided on the basis of political oratory alone. "Barack Obama bringeth rapture to his audience," Jack Shafer, editor of the on-line magazine Slate, wrote recently. "They swoon and wobble, regardless of race, gender, or political affiliation, although few understand exactly why he has this effect on them." Such is the power and skill of a talented orator.

From Winston Churchill ("We shall fight on the beaches . . .") to Franklin D. Roosevelt ("The only thing we have to fear is fear itself") to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ("I have a dream"), there is a long line of historical figures who have distinguished themselves with their words.

Throughout history, charismatic world leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Dr. Martin Luther King, Hitler have used the power of speech to communicate difficult truths, inspire countrymen to fight for independence and to unite to defeat foreign enemies, mercenaries states a website that sells a 13-part documentary series entitled Greatest Speeches of the 20th Century. There’s one thing in common with all those great speeches delivered. All were carefully written.

We have seen so many people like Swami Vivekananda, Swami Ranganatha Nanda, Swami Rajneesh, Hitler, Mussolini, Buddha and Gandhi conquering the world with their gift of gab. That is the power of speech. Of all the methods of communication--the printed word, the spoken word, pictures, or a combination of pictures and words--possibly, none as effective as the spoken word. Obviously, among the disciplines for "Leadership" that an individuals must acquire, Effective Public Speaking must rate a high priority. This is so because the ‘real leader’ must impart knowledge, educate, motivate and inspire his followers at all times. His success in all these matters would ultimately hinge on how well he could present his ideas to his group.

Speakers are leaders

A man is as great as the Truth he speaks

As great as the help he gives

As great as the destiny he seeks

And as great as the life he leads.

Good speakers make people see with their ears

Speech is a mirror of the soul; as a man speaks, so is he. Say what you feel, and feel what you say. Let your speech harmonize with life. A person’s character is revealed by his speech.

Minds are like parachutes, they function only when they are open. So also your public speaking. Come on, open up and Speak to glory.

Now, the fact that Public Speaking capability is not a gift of providence, but can be acquired through training and practice. The fact remains that, Public Speaking must be learnt. This learning can be done in a ‘hit and miss’ manner -- i.e. speaking whenever there are opportunities and learning in the process. But, there is a sure shot way too - that is to attend a formal training course which would impart the knowledge on the "Essentials of Public Speaking", informed D. Ramchandram.

Unfortunately there is no concentrated effort by any school or college all over India to teach this most sought-after skill. Except for few premier management colleges, no where in India this is being taught. Looking at the importance of the subject, Media Junction has decided to run series of programmes to help people develope their public speaking skills.
